Devanagari rendered by HREEM from the edition's roman (IAST) text; the IAST is the edition's own.

The Self is subtler than the subtle, greater than the great; It dwells in the heart of each living being. He who is free from desire and free from grief, with mind and senses tranquil, beholds the glory of the Atman.

Translated by Swami Paramananda

The Self, smaller than small, greater than great, is hidden in the heart of that creature. A man who is free from desires and free from grief, sees the majesty of the Self by the grace of the Creator.

Translated by F. Max Müller
