Manu 5.39

यज्ञार्थं पशवः सृष्टाः स्वयम् एव स्वयंभुवा । यज्ञो ऽअस्य भूत्यै सर्वस्य तस्माद् यज्ञे वधो ऽअवधः ॥

yajñārthaṃ paśavaḥ sṛṣṭāḥ svayam eva svayaṃbhuvā | yajño 'asya bhūtyai sarvasya tasmād yajñe vadho 'a.vadhaḥ ||

Devanagari rendered by HREEM from the edition's roman (IAST) text; the IAST is the edition's own.

Svayambhu (the Self-existent) himself created animals for the sake of sacrifices; sacrifices (have I been instituted) for the good of this whole (world); hence the slaughtering (of beasts) for sacrifices is not slaughtering (in the ordinary sense of the word).
