Devanagari rendered by HREEM from the edition's roman (IAST) text; the IAST is the edition's own.

Nachiketas thought: Among many (of my father's pupils) I stand first; among many (others) I stand in the middle (but never last). What will be accomplished for my father by my going this day to Yama?

Translated by Swami Paramananda

The son said: "I go as the first, at the head of many (who have still to die); I go in the midst of many (who are now dying). What will be the work of Yama (the ruler of the departed) which to-day he has to do unto me?

Translated by F. Max Müller
